REBECCA SPIVACK • a dialogue with walls
As
a painter, muralist and colorist, Rebecca Spivack follows in a long
line of fine artists who have lent their creative talents to the
discipline of interior design. In addition to her accomplishments
as a fine artist she develops custom finishes, murals and architectural
screens.
Ms.
Spivack received both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the Rhode Island
School of Design. From 1984-87, she maintained a studio in Paris.
Upon returning to the U.S., she moved to New York, where a deepening
interest in the mural form led her painting to evolve into surface
design for walls.
Though
her techniques originate in the age-old custom of pigment-tinted
walls, her painterly style is all her own. Her work to date encompasses
a complete visual language, motivated by landscape, light and a
deep sense of place. Her vocabulary consists of recurring motifs
and textures from nature, combined with a serene sense geometry
that relates to the architectural environment. References to folk
iconography as well as regional materials and colors bring depth
to these fundamental themes, and draw upon Spivack’s extensive travels.
A
sensitivity to composition, color and individual space has earned
her a growing portfolio of sight-specific commissions on both coasts.
She has collaborated with a number of prominent architects and interior
designers and her installations have been published in Architectural
Digest, House & Garden, Interior Design, Elle Decor, New York
Times and Interiors magazines. A list of references is available
upon request.
Grants
and awards include Cite Internationale des Arts and the Ministry
of Exterior Affairs, (Paris, France), and the Martha Boschen Porter
Fund, (Sharon, Connecticut). Ms. Spivack was included in the Craft
Museum exhibit: “Banquet: A Celebration of the American Table”).
In addition, she has taught painting and drawing at Brown University,
and at both Parsons and New York University in Paris. She presently
lives and works in New York City.
